Walkers
in France are fortunate to have the French national survey organisation, the Institut
Geographique National (IGN). So whether you're walking in the mountains of France,
on long-distance footpaths, along side the canals, or from the garden of your
gite, the IGN will have your route covered with an appropriate map of the area
of France you require.
The
most appropriate scale for walking is 1:25,000 (2.5 in = 1 mile) and IGN's Serie
Bleue covers the whole of France at this scale on a national rectangular grid.
As part of this series of detailed topographic maps, IGN also produce individual
sheets for the most popular walking areas. These are called Top25 maps, and cover
a larger area, as well as highlight local and long-distance footpaths.

To
identify the IGN 1;25,000 Serie Bleue or Top25 map coverage for the region of
your choice, you can select a region from the list on this
page
and then select Walking and Detailed Topographic Maps from the list of categories
for that region in the Stanfords' catalogue. Once you have chosen the series for
your area, you will also find a graphic index showing the areas covered by each
individual map, as well as a sample of the IGN cartography.
Other
commercial map publishers, using the IGN topographic
cartography as a base, have produced some walking
maps of regions in France.
For example, the very useful Carte de Randonees
published by Rando Editions cover the Pyrenees region
in 14 maps at 1:50,000 scale. The first eleven maps
covering the French side of the Pyrenees use IGN base
maps and overprint footpaths, and also include ski
routes, refuges, campsites, etc.

France's
dense network of long-distance footpaths, the Grand Randonnees (GR) routes, has
long been a great favourite with ramblers. Federation Francaise de la Randonnee
Pedestre (FFRP) produces a wide range of Topo-Guides for these paths. The guides
have extracts from the IGN topographic survey mapping, overprinted with the GR
route. The text is in French, but a large amount of information is conveyed by
symbols, including access to public transport, food shops, and all types of accommodation.
If you want to follow one of the GR routes around Mont Blanc, or along the Pyrenees,
or across the Cevennes in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson and his donkey,
or follow the pilgrim route to Compostella, there is a topo-guide for you.
The
FFRP also produce Topo-Guides for shorter local day walks in many popular areas.

For
the titles available for a specific area you can also select a region from the
list on this
page
and then select Topo-Guides from the list of categories for that region in the
Stanfords' catalogue.
